F1 2022: Verstappen claims his first ever Canadian GP win ahead of Sainz and Hamilton – Times of India

Max Verstappen claimed his fifth win in the last six races at the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix, containing Carlos Sainz to P2, followed by Lewis Hamilton who took his second podium of the season in P3. In the process, Verstappen further extended his Championship lead. With 175 points, the young Dutch racer is now 46 points clear of his teammate Sergio Perez who suffered an early retirement after technical issues.
Perez’s Red Bull gave up on Lap 8, resulting in Virtual Safety Car being called. The Virtual Safety Car returned to action when Mick Schumacher pulled up in the same spot as Perez on Lap 20, after a career-best qualifying position of P6. Yuki Tsunoda was the third driver at the 2022 Canadian GP who did not finish the race after hitting the wall in the later stages.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was voted the Driver of the Day after taking a grid penalty in Qualifying and starting the race from P19, but eventually securing P5 behind George Russell in P4. P2-starter Fernando Alonso saw his P7 position dropped to P9 after he was penalised by the stewards for weaving on the straight while defending his position from Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas.

Meanwhile Red Bull continues to lead the Constructor Standings with 304 points, followed by Ferrari in second with 228. Mercedes comfortably sits on third with 188 points to its name so far.
