12-year-old key cog in Jharkhand gang caught for 72 mobile thefts | Nagpur News – Times of India

NAGPUR: The city police crime branch has busted a six-member gang from Jharkhand, including a 12-year-old and his brother-in-law, who were behind the theft of at least 72 mobile phones worth around Rs16.10 lakh. The gang was active in different markets and crowded places.
The gang, which was busted this week, is learnt to have been operating nationwide, and also had cross-border links with syndicates in Nepal and Bangladesh. The seizure of 72 phones from the gang is probably the biggest mobile phone haul in the history of Nagpur police.
The gang was busted in a drive against mobile thefts under CP Amitesh Kumar. The gang members are learnt to be natives of Motijharna and Maharajpur villages on the Bihar and Jharkhand border. These areas are notorious as hubs for stolen mobile phones, which are sold at lucratively low price.
After tracking the gang for the entire day, crime branch cops under Senior PI Kishor Parvate managed to zero down upon six persons, including the minor, at an eatery at Automotive Chowk on Kamptee Road. The persons arrested have been identified as Mohd Jaffar, Mohd Irshad, Shaikh Naseem, Mohd Arbaaz and Mohd Ashfaque. The 12-year-old too was rounded up.
It’s learnt the gang had rented two places to stay, and posed as casual labourers. They would visit markets in the city to target the crowds assembled there.
“The minor was a key member of the gang. He had an innocent expression, but he would pick up cellphones from the targeted victims after the gang surrounded the victims while posing as fellow buyers at markets,” said a cop.
“The minor would pass on the stolen cellphone to the next gang member, who would hand it over to the next and so on till the handset was taken away far,” he said.
It’s learnt the crime branch under DCP Chinmay Pandit and Addl CP Navinchandra Reddy started focussing on mobile theft cases in the city after several reports were lodged at different police stations. The probe into two mobile phone theft cases at Dhantoli and Sitabuldi gave the cops clues regarding the gang.
An officer said the gang belonged to villages where most of the population is engaged in stealing mobile phones across different locations in India. “The gang targeted persons having high-end Android or iPhones,” said the officer.
