Abhijit lands Goa’s first medal at Nat’l Games | Goa News – Times of India

Panaji: Goa’s search for a medal at the 36th National Games in Gujarat ended when Abhijit Nimbalkar won bronze in trampoline gymnastics at Multipurpose Hall, Sana Complex in Vadodara on Monday.
Abhijeet, 32, missed silver by a whisker as he collected 45.79 points for his bronze effort, while Manu Murali of Services Sports Control Board posted 46. Adhar Bhoir of Maharashtra claimed the gold with a score of 50.14.
“This is the happiest day of my life. It is a great day for Goa gymnastics as well. We have big dreams for Goa now that we have won the medal. I was confident of winning a medal. It hurts me that I missed silver due to one mistake, but that’s life,” said Abhijeet, who is also a coach for Goa Gymnastic Association.
Goa barely made it to the trampoline event as top eight teams can feature in the event. Since trampoline was introduced for the Games, Goa were right at the bottom.
Even to make it to the National Games, the gymnast from Margao had to go through a tough routine.
“Since we don’t have facilities here, our association sends us to the host’s venue a few days prior to the event. This time we were fortunate that we had a 20-day camp at Pune. I believe my efforts will inspire gymnasts and we will do even better,” said Abhijit, who won the silver medal at the 2013 Gymnastics Nationals held at Sangli.
It was a great day for Goan gymnastics as another trampoline athlete Subodeep Nandi made it to the final. Though he missed the medal, he finished seventh after recording 17.68.
Goa Gymnastic Association had pinned their hopes on both the gymnasts and were hoping for two medals.
In the qualifying round, Abhijit finished third at 44.7, while Subodeep recorded 40 out of 16 competitors.
“It is a great start. We had put in years of effort. Abhijit has seen his share of failures. I am really happy that he got his dues,” said Sudesh Thakur, president of Goa Gymnastics Association.
The Margao resident will head to take part in the World Championship trials to be held in Mumbai on October 9
