Ahmedabad: BRTS bus with 25 passengers catches fire near Helmet Circle | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: A BRTS bus carrying 25 passengers caught fire, just as it docked at the Memnagar bus stand near Helmet Circle around 8.30am on Friday. The incident has again brought to fore the issue of periodic maintenance and safety audits of public buses.
The civic body has requested the directorate of forensic science to investigate why the bus, which runs on CNG, caught fire. It also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the bus operator, Travel Time.
The bus driver was the first to notice smoke emanating from the engine. He raised an alarm and docked the bus close to the sensor-based automatic gates, allowing the passengers to escape immediately. None of the passengers were hurt. Those waiting to board the route-3 bus also exited the bus stand.
DyMC Arjav Shah said a technical inquiry has been instituted. “Prima facie, it appears that the bus’s air-conditioning system triggered the fire. We have requested the forensic experts to ascertain the reason for the fire,” says Shah.
