Assam Police arrests West Bengal unit PFI head for ‘sedition’, gets his custody for 4 days | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Friday arrested West Bengal state president of Popular Front of India (PFI) on sedition charges, making him the eleventh PFI member to have been arrested by the state police since Thursday.
Additional DGP (Special Branch) of Assam Police Hiren Nath said PFI leader Dr Minarul Seikh, who is a resident of West Bengal, was picked up from New Delhi on Thursday by a team of Assam Police.
“He was brought to Assam today and has been arrested in the same case as the 10 others arrested on Thursday. He was produced in the court on Friday and has been remanded in four-day police custody,” Nath said.
Nath alleged, “In general, the charge is that these 11 PFI members were indulging in whipping up communal passion and sentiments of the religious minority by criticizing every policy of the government with communal overtones.”
Seikh has also been charged with criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.
According to police, these PFI leaders criticised with communal overtones government policies like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens and ‘D’ Voter, the new state education policy, the State Cattle Protection Act, the extension of AFSPA, TET examination, the Agnipath scheme and eviction of encroached government lands with a view to term these actions of the government as an attack on the Muslim community.
These leaders were also trying to spread communal feelings in Muslim-dominated pockets of Barpeta, Goalpara, Badarpur by whipping up their sentiments on the issue of communal violence, Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti that took place in Rajasthan, police said.
