Assam: Three Ulfa-I linkmen held in Tinsukia | Guwahati News – Times of India


DIBRUGARH: Three youths were arrested on Wednesday for maintaining frequent links with Ulfa-I in a joint operation by police and the army in Tinsukia district.
The arrested have been identified as Harakanta Moran (24), Kolia Dahotia (36) and Diplav Phukan (27) of Tinsukia district. They have been kept at Digboi police station and are being interrogated for further information.
Police said Ulfa (I) has been clandestinely carrying out recruitment drives from border districts like Tinsukia by targeting young people from poor families. The sympathisers or linkmen of the militant outfits are usually given the responsibility by the Ulfa (I) top brass to scout for youths in the 20-30 age group for recruitment. The linkmen, who apart from luring the vulnerable youths provide logistic support, conduct recce and also provide the rebels shelter and safe passage.
Recently, the NIA had conducted searches at 16 locations in seven districts of Assam, including Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, pertaining to the activities of Ulfa (I) and seized digital devices, live ammunition and incriminating documents related to Ulfa (I).
