HUBBALLI: If everything goes as planned, the public central library in Dharwad will soon be a 24×7 model library. As the number of students for competitive exams have increased in the district, they are now demanding a complete 24×7 facility at the public library. Over 1,000 readers visit the public library daily.
The department has planned to develop the library on the second floor of the building. The department has requested Mayor Iresh Anchatageri, who is the chairman of the Hubli-Dharwad City library authority, to develop the library into a 24×7 facility. Soon, the department will send a proposal to CM Bommai.
Dharwad is growing as an education hub and there is a huge demand for a 24×7 library, Competitive exam aspirants are seen in large numbers reading in these libraries. The public library is now a hub for students who are into competitive exams. The complete structure of the library has changed in recent days. Due to the lack of enough space to accommodate an increasing number of readers , many are now using the floor for reading in the library.
According to a source, under the Karnataka Public Library Act, 1965 there are City Central Libraries with branch libraries serving in the state. With the aim of developing education, knowledge and reading among the public, the Karnataka government in 1965 framed the Karnataka Public Library Act and laid the foundation for the development of the network of public libraries. Hubli-Dharwad public libraries are dominant among the urban central libraries.
Mayor Iresh Anchatageri, who is the chairman of the Hubli-Dharwad City library authority, visited the library and assured to develop it into a 24X7 facility. He also discussed sending a proposal to the CM very soon, deputy director of the department of public library, M B Karigar told TOI.
Every day readers are increasing and demanding that the library be converted into a 24×7 facility for readers. “We have planned to develop this facility on the second floor as it has a lot of space. For the convenience of the readers, the second floor will be converted into a 24×7 facility,” Karigar said.
“We have discussed this in a meeting with the mayor. We will send a proposal, seeking to develop this library under any special scheme or allot any other fund for it. Soon, I will send a proposal,” he added.
Laxman H, who will be attending a competitive exam, said, “Due to many recruitment exams nowadays, readers are now using the library. On the first floor, the public are allowed to read magazines, newspapers.”
“The first and second floors are now occupied by students who use it for studying. The second floor should be converted into a 24×7 library facility for the benefit of readers.”
