DHARWAD: Rationing of DAP and urea fertilizers by officials at Dharwad Taluk Agricultural Produce Cooperative marketing Society in APMC yard here on Wednesday sparked off protest by farmers who had come to purchase the fertiliser. Good pre-monsoon rains has created conducive atmosphere for the Kharif sowing operations to commence early.
Anticipating early onset of monsoon, the farmers have already begun sowing operations in over 25,000 hectares in Dharwad taluk and had come to purchase DAP and urea on Wednesday. They were dejected after the officials allegedly said that due to a shortage, they have been asked to distribute limited quantity of fertiliser to the farmers.
However, joint director of Agriculture, Rajshekhar said the district has a stock of 20,800 metric tonnes of various chemical fertilizers including 6,916 tonnes of DAP. He said the district has received 3,890 tonnes of DAP on May 31 and June 1 and they have been supplied to all the primary agricultural credit cooperative societies in the district. The fertilizers will be supplied according to demand and the farmers can buy as per requirement, he said.
Farmers are coming to Dharwad everyday at 5am and stand in queues in front of the distribution centres, but they are only getting five gunny bags of fertiliser which is insufficient, said a farmer.
