GURUGRAM: The city on Saturday witnessed a slight drop in new Covid cases with 403 new patients as compared to 473 a day earlier.
With this, the daily positivity rate has also come down to 9.93% as compared to 11.49% on Friday.
The tally of active cases now stands at 1,744, of which 63 are hospitalised. No death related to the virus was reported on Saturday, while 408 people recovered from the infection. According to the health department, 4,060 tests were carried out in the last 24 hours.
Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurugram said, “We are trying to ensure that the positivity rate comes down below 5% by enforcing containment and testing. We have been carrying out more than 4,000 tests daily. Also, our active cases have now come down to below 2,000. People need to follow all Covid protocols as infection rate is high at present.”
The doctors believe that the sub-lineages of Omicron variant have a better ability to evade the immune system and cause infection, thereby leading to an increase in cases. “Presently available vaccines have a higher protective ability against hospitalisation and severity of the disease, however, the chances of re-infection may not decrease. They have very low protective effect against an infection, particularly from the Omicron sub-lineages. Thus a person who is fully vaccinated and even received a booster shot may or may not be vulnerable to infection,” said Dr Sanjay Verma, senior consultant, Internal Medicine, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram .
The doctors have advised that all Omicron sub-lineages have extremely high transmissibility, however, regular and consistent use of good quality face masks together with avoiding crowded places, particularly closed spaces with poor ventilation, can greatly reduce the chances of getting infected.
Meanwhile, a total of 4,874 people were administered Covid vaccines in the city, taking the total tally to 56,39,802. However, there will be no session site at the government vaccination centres on Sunday. On Saturday, Haryana reported 719 new cases of Covid with a positivity rate of 5.44%. The state currently has 3,686 active cases.
