SSP (C&I) Narra Chaitanya issued an order on Wednesday placing constable D Kannan under suspension.
Kannan and his friend were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Monday following a complaint from the student from Hyderabad, who came to Puducherry to participate in an intercollegiate annual contest, ‘Spandan,’ hosted by Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer).
In her complaint lodged with the D Nagar police, the student stated that she was walking near a parking lot on the Jipmer campus when one of the two men on a motorcycle misbehaved with her. A few minutes later, the man who inappropriately touched her started stalking her.
She told her friend about the incident. The friend attempted to nab him, but he managed to disappear into the crowd. Again a few minutes later, the man walked past her and made threatening gestures. Her friend attempted to nab him and sought help from security personnel posted there. She stated that the security personnel had allowed him to escape and stopped her friend who attempted to nab him.
The police booked the two men under sections 354 (assault of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) r/w 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and began inquiries. Based on a CCTV footage, they identified the two men as police constable D Kannan and his friend Sivakumar and arrested them.
