The counting in other segments is under way with a neck to neck fight.
In Muslim-dominated Malerkotla segment, Simranjit Mann has bagged over 30,503 votes whereas AAPs Gurmail Singh had got 22,402 votes. The Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy got 13,030 votes, BJP candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon bagged 5,412 votes and SAD (B)-BSP candidate Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana got 35,73 votes in Malerkotla segment.
Out of total 15 rounds in Malerkotla, Simranjit Mann got a lead in all the rounds except 3rd round when an AAP candidate got around 62 votes more than Simranjit Mann.
In Muslim dominated Malerkotla, Simranjit Mann had supported the Muslim community during their protest on June 10 in Malerkotla against now suspended spokesperson of BJP over prophet Mohammad row.
‚ÄúSimranjit Singh is the only person who stands with the minority and speak against their suppression. Even on June 10 protest by Muslim community, Simranjit had himself reached to join the protest and give memorandum under name of his political party seeking action against suspended BJP spokesperson who in a TV debate had made objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad. On the other hand, Malerkotla MLA Jamil Ur Rehman neither participated in the protest nor he raised his voice against BJP over this matter till now,” said president of Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan society Punjab, Aarif Khan, who had led the protest.
Notably, in all the nine assembly segments falling under Sangrur Lok Sabha seat including Lehra, Sunam, Dhuri, Sangrur, Dirba, Barnala, Bhadaur, Mehal Kalan and Malerkotla, AAP had won the seats with impressive vote margin in 2022 assembly elections.
In 2022 assembly elections, Simranjit Mann lost from Amargarh assembly segment in Malerkotla district to AAP candidate prof Jaswant Singh Gajjanmajra who won with a margin of 6,000 votes. In the 2017 assembly elections, Simranjit Mann contested from the Barnala seat and got 5061 votes (3.78 per cent vote share). Mann, who last won elections as Sangrur MP in 1999, had failed to have any impact in 2017 assembly elections.
