VARANASI: Munesh Yadav, who had lost the previous panchayat election by a thin margin, was sprayed with bullets in full public view in Hathiya village under Sarai Lakhansi police station in Mau district on Sunday.
Before the police present at the site could act, the shooters fled the scene. The incident has left the village tense.
Mau superintendent of police Avinash Pandey said that Munesh was killed for objecting to the use of alleged poor quality construction material being used in a drain by the sitting gram pradhan and persons engaged by him. All the persons involved in opening fire on Yadav have been identified and raids are being conducted for arrest of the accused, he said. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination while heavy police force has been deployed in the village, the SP added.
During initial investigation, it came to light that a drain was being constructed in Hathiya village and there had been a dispute over the quality of construction materials being used in it. Police had also taken note of this dispute in the past also and had initiated preventive action.
On Sunday morning, Yadav, who was active in village politics following his loss in the last panchayat election for gram pradhan’s office, reached the spot with his supporters and raised serious objection over the poor quality material used in the drain construction. After this, he and his supporters and the sitting gram pradhan and contractor came face to face. On being informed, police from the local police outpost reached the spot and separated both the groups.
However, Yadav had travelled around 30-40 yards when some armed miscreants opened indiscriminate fire at him, said the Mau SP. Before the cops could reach there, the shooters had fled the scene. The policemen present there immediately rushed Yadav to hospital, but he died on the way. The killing led to a high-voltage drama as Yadav’s family members and supporters snatched the body from the police and returned to Hathiya village.
Sensing the gravity of the matter, the police informed the senior officials after which a heavy police force and PAC reached the village. The SP talked to Yadav’s family and his supporters and assured them of stern action against those involved in killing as well as those using poor quality material in construction of drain. He also assured them that the role of sitting gram pradhan will also be probed in the killing. Later, the family members relented and handed over his body for the autopsy.
