VADODARA: Students leaders of the MS University distributing the Tricolour were allegedly threatened by a man with a fake gun. The accused was held within hours of the incident by the prevention of crime branch (PCB) of the city police which found the gun to be a cigarette lighter actually.
The incident took place on Saturday morning when members of the All Gujarat Students Union (AGSU) were distributing the national flag at private tuition classes. The students were coming out of the Alankar Tower in Sayajigunj when the man stopped them and allegedly tried to prevent them from distributing the flags. He asked the students if they knew the meaning of the Tricolour, said the complaint.
According to the offence filed by Pankaj Jaiswal of AGSU, the man thereupon entered into an argument with them and even tried to snatch a flag from Jaiswal which the latter resisted.
At this point, the offence states that the the accused pulled out the gun-shaped lighter kept in a leather case tucked in the accused’s trouser.
Jaiswal ran towards the Sayajigunj police station which is located at a stone’s throw from the Alankar Tower and informed the police. An offence was registered regarding the incident and Jaiswal also gave the number of the man’s two-wheeler, which he was able to note down.
Along with the Sayajigunj police station, other agencies of the city police also swung into action upon learning about the incident.
PCB sleuths traced the man and arrested him by the afternoon itself. PCB police inspector J J Patel said that the accused was identified as Kabir Pathan, a resident of Navayard area of the city. PCB and special operations group are questioning Pathan, who claimed to work from home for an IT company. Pathan is being questioned regarding his motive and other aspects too.
Cops said that a formal declaration regarding the findings of the investigations would be made at a later stage.
