Nitish Kumar: Caste-based survey in Bihar soon, announces Nitish Kumar after all-party meet | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Caste-based survey will be conducted in Bihar soon, announced chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday after chairing an all-party meeting in Patna.
Addressing a press conference along with Rashtriya Janata Dal leader (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav, Nitish Kumar said that the “caste-based count” will be done in a set time frame. Prominent leaders of all nine political parties which have presence in the state assembly, participated in the all-party meeting and unanimously decided to hold the caste-wise enumeration of population.
“In the meeting we unanimously decided that a caste-based census will be done in a set time frame. Soon a cabinet decision will be taken and it will be available in the public domain,” said Nitish Kumar.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav asserted that the “caste-based survey” was in the interest of the people of the state and urged the Central government to provide the necessary financial support.
“It’s a caste-based survey, not a census. It’s our win. Today we suggested (in the all-party meeting) that social anthropologists should be included in this,” Tejashwi said.
“We’ve said to bring the (bill) in the next cabinet meeting and start it in the month of November. During Chhath puja people who reside outside Bihar will also come to the state and till then we can complete preparation for it,” he added.
Caste-census has become a key political issue in Bihar. Most of the parties in Bihar, including the RJD which is in opposition in the state, have called for caste-census.
The Bihar chief minister had earlier said that the state government will conduct a caste census, and would seek political consensus before doing so
Highlighting the importance of the caste Census, Nitish Kumar had said that it would enable the government to work for the development of various sections of the society.
The last caste-wise enumeration in the country was held in 1931 during British rule.
