A team of scientists from the Institute for Geosciences at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, analyzed a rare diamond “formed 660 meters below the Earth‘s surface using Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry.”

There are numerous ringwoodite inclusions in the stone, which indicate a high level of water content.

The team also analyzed the rock chemically. Diamonds come from the classic part of the Earth’s mantle. It was similar to almost every piece of mantle rock around the world.

This study is closer to Jules Verne‘s concept of an ocean on Earth, showing that the transition zone holds significant amounts of water. Instead, the rocks underneath contain moisture, so they don’t get wet, and water drips.
