Gigantic ‘ocean’ near Earth’s core discovered by scientists. Read details

Ocean has been confirmed to enter the transition zone with subducting plates, which was previously only a theory. That is, our planet’s interior is involved in our planet’s water cycle.

The situation will be in this favor because of their density. Wadsleyite and ringwoodite can store large amounts of water, so the conversion zone could theoretically absorb more water than the ocean.

Frankfurt geoscientists have now found the answer through an international study. Researchers analyzed a rare diamond from Africa. Its formation occurred 660 kilometers deep at the interface of the transition zone and the lower mantle, where ringwoodite dominates.

A team of scientists from the Institute for Geosciences at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, analyzed a rare diamond “formed 660 meters below the Earth‘s surface using Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry.”

There are numerous ringwoodite inclusions in the stone, which indicate a high level of water content.

The team also analyzed the rock chemically. Diamonds come from the classic part of the Earth’s mantle. It was similar to almost every piece of mantle rock around the world.

This study is closer to Jules Verne‘s concept of an ocean on Earth, showing that the transition zone holds significant amounts of water. Instead, the rocks underneath contain moisture, so they don’t get wet, and water drips.

FAQ

Who gave the concept of the ocean in Earth’s mantle region?
Jules Verne

Is the ocean in Earth’s mantle in liquid form?
No, it is present as a rock that neither drips nor is wet to touch.
