Kolkata: Helmetless cop on bike rams truck stopped by PCR van, dies | Kolkata News – Times of India

KOLKATA: A 38-year-old policeman died after his bike rammed a truck from behind as the truck driver suddenly slammed the brakes after being flagged down by a PCR van. The incident occurred near the Diamond Harbour-MG Road intersection at 3.27am on Monday.
The victim, Pradip Mukherjee, was just behind truck and was riding without a helmet.
He sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead by doctors at a nursing home, around 100m from the accident spot.
Mukherjee, a resident of Sarada Park in Thakurpukur, was posted in the anti-rowdy section of detective department that was involved in the recent investigations into the violence during the Nabanna march.
According to the police, PCR-41 from Thakurpukur police station was patrolling the area between ESI Hospital and Thakurpukur Bazar after midnight. The vehicle was parked opposite the 3A bus stand when the cops spotted the truck. They signalled the driver to stop for checking his documents.
“The PCR van is usually not mandatory for this job but on special occasions it does carry out checks,” said a police source.
The CCTV footage of the accident showed that Mukherjee had failed to swerve and avoid the truck, which halted suddenly in the middle of the road, and hit the vehicle.
The Thakurpukur police registered a case. The fatal squad of traffic police is likely to investigate the accident.
Lalbazar sources hinted that all angles, including the role of the PCR, will be probed.
