Punjab: Balbir Singh Seechewal, Vikramjit Singh Sahney file Rajya Sabha nominations | Chandigarh News – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Noted environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and entrepreneur-philanthropist Vikramjit Singh Sahney on Tuesday filed their nomination papers for two Rajya Sabha seats from Punjab.
After filing their nominations, Seechewal and Sahney met state assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. Cabinet ministers Harpal Singh Cheema and Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal were also present on occasion. AAP had named the two for the Upper House of Parliament on May 28. The terms of Rajya Sabha members from Punjab, Ambika Soni (Congress) and Balwinder Singh Bhunder (SAD) are due to expire on July 4.
The election of Seechewal and Sahney is almost certain in view of the overwhelming majority of the AAP in Punjab assembly.
Scrutiny of nominations will be done on June 1, while the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is June 3. Seechewal is known for his efforts to clean the 160-km-long Kali Bein rivulet in Kapurthala’s Sultanpur Lodhi while Sahney is the international president of the World Punjabi Organisation, which is aimed at fostering social, economic and cultural bondage and is functional in 22 countries.
In March, AAP was targeted by opposition for sending five “non-Punjabis” to Rajya Sabha, including former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, AAP’s co-incharge of Punjab affairs Raghav Chadha, party’s election strategist for Punjab Sandeep Pathak, besides Lovely Professional University Chancellor Ashok Kumar Mittal and Ludhiana industrialist Sanjeev Arora.
