Samsung’s choice: Galaxy Z Fold4 or Galaxy Z Flip4?

Foldable smartphones are here to stay Samsung’s recent foldables – Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 – break the clutter of boring smartphones and are incremental upgrades that make a big difference.

The good: Both phones come with improved and slimmer hinges, which make them thin overall. Though the difference in Z Flip4 is minor, it is huge in the Z Fold4. The hinge mechanism on both devices feels durable and smooth. Thanks to the new hinge setup, the cover display is now wider on the Fold4, and it is shorter and wider. It is a clever and practical move by Samsung. Performance-wise, both the handsets come with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipsets and they can handle anything effortlessly.

SD 8+Gen 1 is also a power-efficient chipset. The Z Flip4’s bigger 3,700mAh battery nets a full day of battery life. The Z Fold4 has the same 4400mAh battery as the previous version, but it can put other devices with a bigger battery to shame. The camera has also improved on both devices. Z Fold4 gets an upgraded 50MP primary sensor along with a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP 3x telephoto sensor, which deliver bright and vivid shots. The camera on the Z Flip4 also offers a good output.

The bad: The ultra-thin glass still feels a little fragile and this applies to both Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. Though Samsung claims it has used a stronger glass this year, it is still behind the regular slab smartphones. Another major drawback is the Z Fold4’s under-display selfie camera, which is a 4MP sensor with barely manageable camera quality.

What else?

Samsung has also pulled in some tricks with the software. Take Flex mode, for example, or the new taskbar on the Z Fold4. Both features are designed to help users utilise the maximum foldable form factor.

The Flex mode lets users view the app on one side of the display when folded half the way, while the bottom part displays essential options. Similarly, the new taskbar makes multitasking on Z Fold4 easier, allowing users to simply jump from an app just like a Windows laptop. It also opens apps in a multi window setup.

Which one to buy?:

The Galaxy Z Flip4 starts at Rs 89,999 while the Galaxy Z Fold4 comes in at Rs 1,54,999.
