32-year-old Alize Cornet didn’t get bogged down in the third round match of the women’s singles at Wimbledon 2022, despite Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak. On Saturday, July 2, Cornet defeated World No.1 Swiatek 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1.

Swiatek, who was deemed as one of the strongest contenders to win the title, went down in straight sets without much of a fight. Cornet said that she backed herself to get past the Polish star despite the odds heavily stacked against her.

“Why not me? I kept telling myself, well, the streak. I was telling myself someone would have to break the streak eventually, and why not me? I thought that here was the best chance for me to do it. Maybe it was her less good surface,” Cornet was quoted as saying after the match.

Earlier, Swiatek had mentioned that she tried to make herself comfortable while playing on grass, but to no avail. After her defeat, she said that she didn’t rule out the chances of her ouster from the tournament.

The Nice, France-born Cornet, in the meantime, said that she tends to be at her best when she is among the dark-horses of a tournament.

“I think I’m a little more relaxed when I’m the underdog. I think I have nothing to lose, and that’s where I have nothing to lose that I’m the most dangerous. I play my shots, like, more relaxed, I hit better from the baseline. I don’t know, I don’t have any parasite in my thoughts,” Cornet added.

Cornet is next set to lock horns with Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the Round of 16 match on Monday, July 4.
